History

The historic dry dock facility has just recently been reinstated. The dry dock was created 100 years ago, and was part of the original 200 year old canal arm which serviced the mills that operated on this site.

Dry Dock at Portland Basin MarinaThe dry dock was last used in the 1940s and after a period of disuse it was filled in along with the rest of the canal arm in the late 1950s.

One of its claims to fame is that a life boat belonging to the Lusitania, which was torpedoed and sank off Ireland in 1915; was at a later date shipped over and the life boat converted here into a pleasure craft for the Bown family who still own the foundry adjacent to the dry dock.
